Five Signs You’re Running on Empty (And How to Refill Your Heart)

Friend, sometimes the exhaustion you’re feeling isn’t because you’re doing too little—it’s because you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

Have you ever reached the end of the day and thought,

“I shouldn’t be this tired.”

You slept.

You drank the coffee.

You crossed everything off your to-do list.

Yet, somehow, you’re still exhausted.

Not just physically.

Emotionally.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

If this sounds familiar, then you may not simply be tired.

Instead, you may be running on empty.

Fortunately, recognizing the signs is the first step toward changing them.

So, let’s gently explore five ways your heart may be asking you to slow down.

1. You Feel Constantly Exhausted—Even After Rest

First of all, there’s a difference between being sleepy and being depleted.

Sleep helps your body recover.

However, when your heart has been pouring into everyone else without taking time to refill, sleep alone often isn’t enough.

As a result, you wake up already counting the hours until bedtime.

Likewise, the joy you once felt slowly gives way to simply trying to make it through the day.

Friend…

Your body may be asking for sleep.

Meanwhile, your soul may be asking for peace.

2. Everything Feels Like One More Thing

Next, have you ever looked at something you normally enjoy and thought, “I just can’t.”

Reading.

Cooking.

Calling a friend.

Taking a walk.

Even the smallest tasks suddenly feel overwhelming.

That’s because, when you’re running on empty, your mind doesn’t have room for one more responsibility.

Instead, everything begins to feel heavy.

Please hear this, friend.

It isn’t because you’re lazy.

Rather, it’s because you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

3. You’ve Stopped Doing the Things That Bring You Joy

Now think back for just a moment.

What used to make you smile?

Painting?

Photography?

Gardening?

Journaling?

Baking?

Reading?

Watching sunsets?

Somewhere along the way, those little joys quietly disappeared from your calendar.

Not because they stopped mattering.

Instead, everything else seemed more urgent.

Even so, your joy hasn’t disappeared.

It’s simply been waiting patiently for your attention.

After all, joy doesn’t have to be recreated.

It simply needs an invitation back into your life.

4. You’re Taking Care of Everyone Except Yourself

Meanwhile, you’re remembering everyone else’s needs.

Birthdays.

Appointments.

Favorite snacks.

School activities.

Deadlines.

You know exactly what everyone else needs.

However, when someone asks,

“How are you doing?”

You pause.

Not because you don’t want to answer.

Rather, because you honestly don’t know anymore.

Friend…

You deserve the same kindness you freely give everyone else.

5. You Can’t Remember the Last Time You Felt Truly Peaceful

Finally, ask yourself this simple question.

When was the last time you felt truly peaceful?

  • Not productive.
  • Not busy.
  • Not distracted.

Peaceful.

When was the last time you watched the sunrise?

  • Or listened to birds singing?
  • Or sat outside without checking your phone?
  • Or enjoyed your coffee while it was still warm?

Many of us believe peace comes after we finish everything on our to-do list.

However, that’s rarely how life works.

Instead, peace begins the moment we intentionally make room for it.

Why So Many Women Run on Empty

Unfortunately, many women have quietly accepted exhaustion as normal.

We wear busyness like a badge of honor.

We convince ourselves that resting means we’re falling behind.

So we say,

“I’ll slow down after this week.”

  • After this project.
  • After vacation.
  • After the kids are older.
  • After the house is cleaner.
  • After one more thing.

However, “one more thing” often becomes one more month.

Then one more year.

Friend…

You were never meant to live that way.

Even Jesus Made Time to Rest

One of the most comforting reminders in Scripture is that Jesus often stepped away from the crowds.

  • He withdrew to quiet places.
  • He prayed.
  • He rested.
  • He spent time with His Father.

If even Jesus intentionally made room for renewal, then perhaps we can stop believing exhaustion is a badge of honor.

Psalm 23:2–3 reminds us:

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.”

Notice something beautiful.

God refreshes.

He doesn’t rush.

How to Begin Filling Your Cup Again

Thankfully, you don’t need an entire weekend away.

You don’t need the perfect schedule.

You don’t need everything to be finished first.

Instead, simply begin with one small act of kindness toward yourself.

For example, you might:

  • Sit outside with your morning coffee.
  • Read one chapter of a good book.
  • Take a ten-minute walk.
  • Journal your thoughts.
  • Turn your phone off for thirty minutes.
  • Listen to worship music.
  • Spend time in prayer.
  • Watch the sunset.
  • Say “no” to one unnecessary commitment.

Although each choice seems small, together they create lasting change.

Refill Before You’re Empty

Too often, we wait until we’re completely burned out before taking care of ourselves.

Instead, what if we began refilling our hearts before they were empty?

Imagine how much more joy…

Patience…

Kindness…

Energy…

And peace you’d have to share.

After all, taking care of yourself isn’t taking anything away from your family.

On the contrary, it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give them.

Because when you’re healthier emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually, everyone around you benefits.

Your Heart Matters Too

Friend, if you recognized yourself in even one of these signs, I hope you’ll remember this.

  • You are not weak.
  • You are not failing.
  • You are not selfish for needing rest.

Instead, you’ve simply been giving more than you’ve been receiving.

So today, give yourself permission to breathe.

Take one small step.

Then another tomorrow.

Before long, you’ll discover you’re no longer simply surviving.

You’re living again.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do isn’t pushing harder.

Instead, it’s choosing to pause.

Take a deep breath.

Watch the sunset.

Call a friend.

Read one chapter.

Sit quietly with God.

Or simply enjoy a few peaceful moments without feeling guilty.

Friend, you don’t have to earn rest.

You don’t have to deserve peace.

And you certainly don’t have to wait until everything is finished before taking care of yourself.

So start today.

Refill your heart one small moment at a time.

Before you know it, you’ll notice something wonderful.

Not only are you caring for everyone else…

You’re finally caring for yourself, too.

A Little Challenge Before You Go…

So, before you tackle another load of laundry…

Before you answer another email…

Or before you cross one more thing off that never-ending to-do list…

I’d love to leave you with one small challenge.

This week, do one thing that fills your heart.

Take the walk.

Read the book.

Buy the flowers.

Watch the sunset.

Sit on the porch with your coffee while it’s actually still hot for a change. (Now that might require divine intervention. 😄)

After all, the dishes can wait ten minutes.

Likewise, the laundry will still be there tomorrow. (Trust me… it always is. I keep hoping the Laundry Fairy will show up, but I’m beginning to think she’s retired.)

Your heart, however, shouldn’t have to keep waiting.

Because you only get one beautiful life, don’t spend all of it taking care of everyone else while forgetting the wonderful woman God created you to be.

Instead, slow down.

Laugh often.

Choose joy.

Take the scenic route once in a while.

Buy yourself the flowers without waiting for a special occasion.

And if anyone asks why you’re taking a little time for yourself, simply smile and tell them Linda said it’s perfectly okay. 😉

After all, a woman whose heart is full shines a little brighter, loves a little deeper, laughs a little louder, and reminds everyone around her that joy is contagious.

So, start today.

Take one small step.

Then take another tomorrow.

Before long, those little moments of rest, joy, and peace will begin to refill your heart in ways you never expected.

Finally, remember this, friend…

The world doesn’t need the exhausted version of you that’s been running on fumes.

It needs the joyful, peaceful, wonderfully authentic woman God created you to be.

And if you happen to eat the last cookie while you’re taking your well-deserved break…

Well…

Between you and me…

I promise not to tell. 🍪💕

XOXO, ~Linda
